Introduction
An Open-Source Digital Workplace

OpenDesk originated from the “Sovereign Workplace” initiative of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and has been further developed by the Center for Digital Sovereignty (ZenDiS) since 2024. Instead of developing a new standalone solution, OpenDesk brings together proven European open-source applications under a common, centrally managed interface - ranging from file management to groupware and video conferencing.

This is not an in-house development, but rather a coordinated integration of established open-source projects under a unified user management system.

Individual components can be added, replaced, or integrated into existing system environments without changing the overall architecture.

All core components are sourced from European manufacturers and are not subject to any non-European control.

How OpenDesk Is Structured Technically

At its core is a unified identity and access management system that provides single sign-on access to all application modules. Deployment is container-based on Kubernetes, allowing OpenDesk to be operated both on-premises and in managed cloud environments.

Central User Management

Univention Nubus, with its Keycloak-based identity and access management, ensures consistent login and access rights across all modules.

Container-based operations

All components are designed for use on Kubernetes—they are scalable, portable, and independent of any specific infrastructure.

The Components of the Suite

File management and synchronization.

Browser-based word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Email, Calendar, and Contacts.

End-to-end-encrypted chat based on the open Matrix standard.

Video conferencing with SIP integration via Jigasi.

Project and Task Management.

Knowledge Base and Documentation.

Encrypted notes and chart creation.

Identity & Access
One login for all applications

User management is not an additional feature, but rather the connecting element of the architecture. All modules access the same identity via standardized interfaces and preconfigured integration packages.

  • Single sign-on across all integrated modules
  • Centralized permission assignment and role management
  • Standardized interfaces for data exchange between modules, such as between file storage and groupware
  • Flexibility to add or replace individual components without interfering with the core architecture

Operating Models
Community Edition and Enterprise Edition

OpenDesk is available in two versions and can be operated independently or purchased as a managed service.

Community Edition
Available free of charge via the open-source repository openCode; self-managed operation; support provided by the community.

Enterprise Edition
Extended feature set with support and services provided by ZenDiS, designed for large organizations and demanding operational requirements.

  • Operation in your own data center (on-premises)
  • Operation as Software-as-a-Service via certified cloud platforms
  • Scalability from municipal institutions up to large federal agencies with several hundred users

OpenDesk as the application layer in secunet cloud architectures

As an open-source component, OpenDesk can be integrated into various secunet cloud environments—depending on the security requirements and operating model of the respective organization.

Operated as a scalable, managed service on open Kubernetes infrastructure for government agencies and businesses with standard security requirements.

Dedicated operation in a controlled infrastructure for organizations with heightened requirements for data storage and operational control.

Classification as a referenced application component in the context of classifiable infrastructures—use depends on the specific security requirements and must be evaluated separately.
